As the original residents of the Alexander Mansion, much has been said about the Alexander Family. However, there were 3 families who resided in the Mansion.

In this article we explore the second residents – the Clark Family.

Alfred L. Clark, son of Mary & Americus Clark was born in Missouri, and had one brother and sister. Alfred married Mary Moody in Tyler, Texas and they had one child, a son, James. Mr. Clark was President of the Southern Pine Association and had owned a number of sawmills in Arkansas (Glenwood), and Texas (Gilmer & Clarksville).

When the Alexanders moved to Swiss Avenue, the house was sold to the Clarks in 1912. At that time, Albert, his wife, Mary, son, James, as well as his brother and sister-in-law moved into 4607 Ross Avenue. Mr. Clark obtained a building permit for alterations to the house in 1912, which was the addition of an archway over the front entrance to the house, containing the letter “C”.

In 1915, Mary Clark died of breast cancer, but the family remained in the house until 1917. The Clarks then moved into the Adolphus Hotel, and the house was sold to Wiley Blair, a wholesale grocer and banker.
