Carriage Entrance

Mosaic tile floor restoration in the Carriage Entrance by Sarah Wandrey

Just off the Butler’s Pantry, the Carriage Entrance hallway contains one of the Mansion’s most intricate original surfaces: a hand-laid mosaic tile floor, designed with scrolls and floral patterns in shades of green, gold, and brick red.

The Mosaic Floor Restoration in 2024

For decades, this floor was hidden beneath carpeting—likely added in the early 2000s to protect Forum members from worn or uneven tile. In 2024, on the occasion of the Alexander Mansion’s 120th birthday, the floor was fully restored by local mosaic artist, Sarah Wandrey and her talented team of artisans.

The floor was revealed again in its full beauty. Its rededication marked not just a repair, but a celebration of the home’s enduring craftsmanship and the care of those who continue to preserve it.

Sarah Wandrey enlisted the expertise of several mosaic artists in the North Texas area: Clayton Cory, Yulia Hanansen, and Barbara Dybala. Brittex Bubbles LLC Quality Cleaning/Janitorial Services carefully cleaned the delicate mosaic tile floor before restoration began.

Watch the process of restoring the mosaic floor in the videos below. See more on Sarah Wandrey’s Facebook page.

Then and Now

Sarah Wandrey, Mosaic Artist, wrote on her Facebook page on January 4, 2024, “This mosaic floor was made around 1905, when the house was built. As you can see, there is a lot of damage. We are removing the damaged areas, repairing the concrete floor, and rebuilding the mosaic with matching porcelain. It’s a joy to bring this beauty back to life.”
